FBI Disrupts Covert Chinese Hacking Group

“Flax Typhoon” posed as an IT company called Integrity Technology Group.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has disrupted a second major Chinese hacking group, FBI Director Christopher Wray announced at a cybersecurity conference.

The group, dubbed “Flax Typhoon,” was operating as a Chinese IT firm called Integrity Technology Group. Director Wray said the group did perform many of the functions of an IT firm, but also “collected intelligence and performed reconnaissance for Chinese government security agencies.” In an international advisory made public that same day, cyber officials from the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand accused Flax Typhoon of compromising more than 250,000 devices worldwide.

The FBI operation against Flax Typhoon was conducted similarly to its takedown of the first Chinese covert hacking group, dubbed Volt Typhoon. Like Volt Typhoon, the FBI director said that Flax Typhoon was targeting U.S. critical infrastructure, but also corporations, media organizations, universities, and government agencies. Director Wray said taking down Flax Typhoon was “just one round in a much longer fight” against likely more groups of Chinese hackers.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Director Wray and FBI officials as they seek to prevent cyber attacks on U.S. technology and infrastructure.
  • For U.S. cyber security and homeland security officials to be discerning in their efforts.
